Washington D.C

I firmly believe that there is something to be gained from every bad/negative experience. In our case, if Simon wasn't away for such long periods I wouldn't feel the need to travel throughout America as much in order to see him. This last week his tournament was just outside Washington DC and we joined him for about 4 days. It also happened to be Independence Day so we kinda got to experience the 4th of July celebrations in style. This is us outside the Whitehouse - yay I DID get to do it. Said hi to Obama and his fam for you all, they couldn't make it to dinner with us but maybe next time we're in town . .

This is the Eisenhower Building an example of all the hoopla that goes into the festivities. Please note: the kids flags were freebies from the hotel and did not come with parental encouragement!

We watched the 4th of July parade that went on the main street between the Whitehouse and the Washington Monument - lots and lots and lots of marching bands.

Patriot or Traitor!?

View from the Lincoln Memorial down the Reflection Pool (did not see JenAY), monument and the ever so distant Capitol Hill.

Old Abe himself.

Two things of note during our stay.

1. We literally bumped into a bit of a celebrity coming out of the hotel lift. Liam looked up and said in awe "ahhhhh Tiger Woods" - he was very pleasant and said something along the lines of 'How ya going buddy'. So my claim to fame is Humphrey B Bear at age 4, Liam gets a golfing ledgend at 3!

2. We promised the kids their first fireworks session and thought we'd do it in style in DC itself - supposedly fantastic fireworks display. A local contact in the area took us out to dinner after which we were to follow him to his house and see the fireworks from a nearby park. We did not actually SEE the fireworks per se.
Due to a comedy of errors (including over eating at dinner, vehicular complications, and some misguided directions) we missed them but we heard the fireworks and saw some reflections on the surrounding buildings as we madly walked to the viewing area. Not a great consolation to the kids. As we did a U-ey to head home Ashley was crying about the fireworks and Liam was just asking to go home to bed!

First rule in parenting - Never promise something if you can't deliver!

Anyway, had a great time. Cant wait till we see Sime again. xx
